This two day residency took place at the Brady Arts and Community Centre, where the Grand Union Youth Orchestra has now firmly set down its local routes. Charismatic workshops leader Ros Davies took responsibility for co-ordinated the workshops, with Tony Haynes, Yousuf Ali Khan and senior youth orchestra member John Andre also assisting as music leaders.
Regular members of the youth orchestra attended as well as a number of new recruits including a mandolin player and talented multi instrumentalist, a fresh young Sarangi player, a talented Trombonist and two young tabla players.
The two day programme was designed to embrace both the experienced and less experience young musicians. The mornings were dedicated to full group work aimed at building musical confidence, where as afternoon were split into different ‘breakout’ sessions. These included a advanced instrument master class exploring harmonic structures in world music, a more basic workshops introducing the GUYO repertoire and idea of improvisation, and a Bengali and Indian Classical master class. Friday’s workshop day was culminated in a public performance to friends and family.
